Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)

Be a Warrior Instead of a Survivor

Author: Dr. Hira Idrees (DPT BZU)

Cognitive behavior therapy is a short term, goal oriented psychotherapy treatment that takes a hands-on practical approach to problem-solving. Its goals is to change the pattern of thinking or behavior that are behind people’s difficulties and so on to change the way they feel.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy that was originally designed to treat severe anxiety and depression, but is now also used for a number of mental disorders. It works to solve current problems and change unhelpful thinking and behavior. CBT can give life to living dead. CBT according to my own clinical experience can do wonders and can give a new soul to a dead body. It can bring back smile on someone’s face and cherish their life once again.

Many patients come with signs and symptoms such as

These are most expected symptoms where CBT can be helpful. Being a medical professional, during medical history taking session must go for a check for if any mental illness going on. Mental illness is more painful as compared to physical illness. I would like to share few clinical cases here.

Case 1

A female patient aged 26 years, with C/O inflammation on both knees. There is no history of any injury or underlying pathology, uric acid level was also normal, no pain at any other region of body.

On examination it was observed cervical muscles were stiff and Hirsutism was also present. On questioning patient told she is suffering from migraine, sleep disturbance, low appetite, ocular muscular stiffness and pain. There were also occasional breathing issues, tachycardia and heart burn.

Medical professional asked, “Is there any stress?” patient replied in negative. Then medical professional tried to gain her trust and finally she told that she was suffering from some social issues from her family side. CBT was applied and after 3 days improvement was almost 80%.

Case 2

A female patient age 48 years, with C/O tennis elbow. She came with her husband for treatment. She was aggressive in nature. Impatient to listen others. Loud in voice very rudely behaving with her husband. CBT was helpful in bringing a happiness in their life again.

Case 3

A female patient aged 19 years admitted to intensive care unit (ICU) because she was suffering from dyspnea. ECG was normal. On further examination and questioning she told she can’t sleep. She is interacting different people in her thoughts in a way that all is real for her. There were neuropathy, hallucinations, nightmares, migraine, sudden panic attacks because of which she loses control on her limbs for many hours. She can’t bear noise. Specifically aggressive towards her mother. She tried to kill her mother twice. Suicidal tendencies were also observed. She was on psychiatric treatment. CBT helped her to get rid of antidepressants and it also helped her to gain her confidence back. Today she is completely fine and success ratio 100%.

So CBT can be so much helpful.

A simple trick

A person who is in need if CBT will answer you like ‘its sunset’ when you will show this picture and ask what time do you see in this picture?.

But a person mentally strong will say “its sunrise”. So just a game of words which can change the whole game.

Here one thing should be cleared that CBT is not only confined to diseased person but it is also required by a normal human who is messed with his life. Just a session of few minutes can do wonders for him.

I have seen many patients those bed ridden but today they are marking the battles!! If you think you are depressed or searching for a ray of hope then please value your health before its too late. You are responsible for your life no one else will bother.there is always a positive side of life just you have to be wise enough. You are gem on globe there is a valuable reason behind your creation just respect yourself so the world can be under your command.Let your mind under your control it is your slave not let it be your master. BE A WARRIOR!
